Home entertainment has been paid more attention recently, and projectors play an important part in that trend of leisure. It has become more popular to see that family watching films, sports or even playing golf on the simulation via projectors. Compared to TVs, the selection of projectors is more economical, but viewers will experience crisp, fine imagery in a larger size.

Most standard projectors must be placed about 10 feet or so away from the screen to produce a 100-inch or larger image. But short throw projectors can generate a large image in a confined space. Short throw projectors are not only used for home entertaining purposes but also for presentations in small areas.

What exactly short throw projectors are?

A short throw projector is an image projecting device which can cast a massive image from only a few feet or inches away from the projection screen. To make buyers easier to select, manufacturers divide this kind of projector into 2 categories: short throw and ultra-short throw. While the average short-throw projector typically requires about four or five feet to cast a 100-inch or larger image, ultra-short throw projectors need merely a couple of inches. Think about the position in the room that you want to place the projector to figure out the desired throw of the product.

Buying Guide

To help you out with what to look for when buying a short throw projector, we have listed some main specs to be considered.

1. Brightness

Brightness can be seen by lumens value. This figure dictates how much ambient light a projector can withstand. In a completely dark room, anything under 1200 lumens should be fine. While rooms with ambient light require at least 2500 lumens projectors.
When finding lumens value in the specs sheets, look for ANSI lumens, not lux lumens, as ANSI lumens are a real measure of brightness. This will give you a ballpark sense of how bright the entire picture gets, and not just the white light. It’s also worth mentioning that for short-throw projectors with Laser or LED-based lighting, they can often deliver a brighter perceived image.

2. Resolution

Compared to TVs, the term of resolution when talking about projectors is slightly different. On TVs, you actually have pixels and lines, so you can measure the exact number of lines of resolution. With a projector, it’s a bulb, so you don’t have these pixels. To make consumers easier to understand the resolution of a projector, the normal figures of resolution on TVs are used to express the equivalent resolution.

Many will boast 4K or 1080p resolutions but are referring to the content the projector supports — different from the projector’s native resolution. Many cheaper projectors will promote HD resolutions, but only have a native resolution of 840 × 480 (DVD quality).
Any time you’re shopping, check the native resolution to get a clear idea of what the image will look like.

3. Contrast Ratio

A good amount of contrast allows you to see more details, particularly when dealing with high-resolution images and videos. The higher the ratio equipped in your projector, the more detailed and crisper visual content will be displayed.

Although, a higher contrast-ratio doesn’t always mean the picture will be better, a higher ratio delivers whiter whites, blacker blacks and better details; while a lower ratio can make your picture look muddled and washed out.

In a darkened room, a contrast-ratio of 2,000:1 or more is excellent; though having a ratio of at least 1,500:1 is good enough.

4. Connectivity options

If you’re using a projector for your home theater system, you may only need an HDMI cable connection which is ideal for transferring high definition video and audio. However, some users want  different kinds of connection, such as via Wifi and Ethernet, as their input sources vary.

With the inputs, it is more of a personal needs preference. So it is important to know what sources of signal you want to project from, this will help you find suitable inputs for your projectors.

5. Image Correction Features - Autofocus, Keystone Correction, and Lens Shift

These features allow you to alter the projected images to make them look proportional. It will be very useful when you cannot install the projector onto the ideal positions, or when you are using a mobile projector. With keystone correction, you can maintain a completely rectangular image even at an angle. There’s horizontal and vertical keystone. Focus lets you ensure the on-screen image is clear. Many budget and even mid-range projectors come with manual focus, although auto-focus is increasingly common on cheaper devices as well. Lens shift lets you physically move a projector’s lens diagonally, vertically, or horizontally for re-adjusting a projector image without repositioning the unit.
